Working with water, space and silence
Matusadona is a place where water changes the way I compose an image. The shoreline of Lake Kariba opens the frame, gives space around the subject and often introduces a sense of silence that is difficult to find elsewhere. I look for simple compositions where an elephant, a dead tree, a strip of water or a distant mountain line can carry the image without unnecessary distraction.
Elephants, dead trees and graphic landscapes
Lake Kariba gives Matusadona a very particular visual signature. The drowned trees emerging from the water, the wide lakeshore plains and the distant escarpment create a natural graphic structure. Elephants are especially powerful in this environment. Their dark forms contrast beautifully with pale water, dry earth, green grass or glowing evening light.
